Hypnosis, what is it?

Look Into My Eyes… Not Around My Eyes!

Hypnotherapy: What Is It & How Can It Help?

Hypnotherapy has been used for centuries as an effective method to rewire thought patterns, change behaviours, and promote healing. It’s been successfully applied to a wide range of issues, including:

🔹 Anxiety & stress management
🔹 Phobias (spiders, flying, public speaking, etc.)
🔹 Pain management
🔹 Stopping smoking & weight loss
🔹 Teeth grinding (Bruxism)
🔹 Sleep disturbances
🔹 Confidence & performance (exams, sports, presentations)

Many people struggle with making changes, it's as if there’s a tug-of-war between the logical part of the mind that wants to break a habit and the unconscious part that keeps pulling them back. Hypnotherapy works by bridging that gap, making lasting change feel natural rather than a battle.

So, What Exactly Is Hypnosis?

First, let’s clear up a common myth: Hypnosis does NOT mean you’re asleep or under someone else’s control. Instead, it’s a state of focused awareness—where the conscious mind takes a backseat, allowing the unconscious mind to become more receptive to positive suggestions.

We all experience hypnotic states every day. Ever been so engrossed in a book or film that you lost track of time? Driven a familiar route only to arrive without remembering the journey? That’s a natural form of hypnosis—a state where your mind is deeply focused while the world around you fades into the background.

Let’s Try a Quick Exercise

Take a deep breath and focus on a fixed object. Let your eyes relax. Now, close your eyes and imagine yourself on a peaceful train journey—hear the rhythmic clatter of the tracks, feel the warmth of the sun through the window, notice the gentle motion of the train… Can you picture it? If so, congratulations! You’ve just experienced a light trance state.

The Science Behind Hypnotherapy

Your brain operates on different levels of awareness. In hypnosis, your mind shifts from the busy, analytical Beta state (everyday thinking) to the more relaxed Alpha and Theta states, where creativity, deep learning, and emotional processing occur.

During this state, the critical, overthinking part of the brain (the left hemisphere) quiets down, allowing the more imaginative, solution-oriented right hemisphere to take the lead. This is why hypnosis can help break habits, reduce pain, and reframe limiting beliefs. It works directly with the subconscious (or unconscious) mind, where real change happens.

How Hypnotherapy Works

Think of me, your hypnotherapist, as a co-driver on your journey. You’re always in control of the wheel, but I help navigate, offering suggestions and guidance to get you where you want to go.

By guiding you into a state of deep relaxation, we can reprogram unhelpful patterns, releasing fears, reducing stress, and unlocking confidence. The process isn’t magic—no wands, no Harry Potter moments—but the results can feel pretty magical!
